One thing that many caregivers realize during the course of providing elder care is that there needs to be a balance between being a caregiver and their own life. If you give up the things that are most important to you in your own life in order to care for someone else, whether it’s part of your job or you’re caring for a family member, then you may become resentful of the individual, their demands on your time, or you could end up being overwhelmed with all of the things that you need to get done. The balance with the things that are important for your own life is essential to being able to deliver exceptional care to the person in need.
How do we go about finding that kind of balance? First, determine what is important to you and the things that you’re unwilling or would be unhappy giving up. This could include working late to help advance your career, spending time with friends on the weekend, or having a date night with your spouse. When you know what you want to maintain in your life, it’s a bit easier to make sure that you schedule those things into the care that you’re providing.
Next, determine what level of care the elderly individual requires. Would your mother need you to stop by every night after work? Does she need help getting up and dressed in the morning? Or does she only need you to come by and help out at times with some simple things from time to time. The more you know about the demands of your loved one, the easier it will be for you to build a reliable and manageable schedule around that.
Lastly, be aware of your time. While you may think that going out of your way or making an extra trip to be there for your mother is no big deal today, what happens if it becomes a regular thing? You want to make sure that your loved one is safe and well cared for, but the moment that you begin to tip certain things out of balance, the harder it’s going to be to be a quality caregiver all of the time.
The most important thing is to ensure that the elderly patient has the best care. If you can’t balance your personal life with the caregiving responsibilities, then you should consider hiring a professional home care provider.
