Well, the leaves are finally starting to turn (and in some parts of the country, it seems as though it’s a little late this year) and that means they are also beginning to fall all over. That means it’s also just about time for fall cleanup and this could make a great elder care event.
Okay, you’re probably thinking to yourself, how could cleaning the leaves be something that would make a great activity with my mother? After all, who really enjoys cleaning up the leaves? You don’t even want to be bothered doing them for your own home, right? Well, think about it this way: the family that cleans leaves together …
Maybe not, but the point is that cleaning the leaves can, and should, be a fun family activity. So what if you don’t really enjoy raking up all those leaves in your own yard, moving them onto a tarp and then dragging that tarp into the woods where you dump it and hopefully never see those pesky leaves again? At least you are able to see your lawn again, right?
What if your mother’s lawn is covered in leaves, but she nor you want to hire someone to come and clean them up at the end of the season? Not only will they tend to eventually blow around (into shrubs, under the deck, along the driveway, and even onto the neighbor’s lawn, who just cleaned his entire yard), but they create an untidy look and appearance to the home. They signal to people that either someone doesn’t live there or doesn’t care.
So what if you brought your entire family over to your mother’s house one Saturday afternoon in the middle of November, once almost all of the leaves in the area have finally fallen down? What if you made it a family reunion type of event? Whether your mother has elderly home care helping her out or not, get your mother out there to help out.
What if she’s in a wheelchair? She could still spend time laughing and spending time with grandchildren or great grandchildren while they make a pile and jump into it. Cleaning the leaves doesn’t have to be a chore, not when you bring the entire family together. Have a picnic while you’re at it. Yes, it would probably be cold out, but that’s why we have hats, gloves, and thick, warm coats. So this year, why not think of fall cleanup and you’ll do something unique and wonderful for elder care.
