Elder Care Meal Plan Ideas

Elder Care in Downer’s Grove, IL

Elder Care in Downer's Grove, ILA number of factors have a direct effect on the diet of aging aging seniors. A decrease in appetite, fixed incomes, medication side effects, and digestive patterns changing could be the culprits for the alterations to meal plans. Even though it may seem impossible for elder care providers and aging seniors to plan nutritious meals, it doesn’t have to be. In some cases, specific recommendations can be made by a physician.

Nutritional Background

As individuals age, the need for good nutrition does not decrease. Those who consume a healthy diet throughout their lives pose less of a risk for certain types of cancer, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. Aging seniors who are experiencing chronic medical conditions should plan their meals accordingly, especially if specific guidelines or restrictions must be enforced.

Nutritional Factors

There are several factors that will influence an elderly person’s appetite including their having difficulty eating by themselves, cooking for one, chewing problems, tasting issues, income problems, transportation issues, problems with mobility, or depression. Overlooking any one of these issues is irresponsible, especially if aging seniors have difficulty standing at the stove to cook for more than a few minutes.

Nutritional Recommendations

According to the National Institute on Aging, their recommendation for the caloric intake for those who are women above the age of fifty and are not physically active, they receive 1,600 calories daily. Men who do not engage in physical activity and are over the age of fifty should receive 2,000 calories per day. When moderate activity is involved for women, they’ll need to increase their caloric intake to 1,800; and men will need to increase theirs to between 2,200 and 2,400.  Finally, women who engage in a lifestyle that is considered active need to increase their caloric intake to between 2,000 and 2,200 daily and men need to increase theirs to 2,400 and 2,800.

Nutritional Considerations

One thing elder care providers and family members should keep in mind during the meal planning process is that not every food that has the same calorie value will provide the same nutritional value. In addition to keeping a calorie count, it is important to keep diets balanced with nutrients from all foods. The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides a website called MyPyramid for people of all ages that offers information not only about caloric intake, but about the food’s nutritional value, as well.

Final Thoughts

When looking at meal planning as part of an in-home care routine, home care providers should address one of the biggest issues that tends to creep up with regards to issues among the elderly. This issue is self-neglect. While many families believe other issues may be a problem when they begin a home care routine with their loved one, this is the most common. Aging loved ones are often forgetful, or they believe certain things are not quite as important as they once were. Therefore, when plans are set firmly in place by senior care providers, aging loved ones can see how important and valuable all aspects of their lives really are.
